The corneal transplantation procedure in Iran has a history of more than 85 years and is, in fact, considered the first organ/tissue transplantation in humans in the country. Today, this procedure is performed commonly in most ophthalmology centers and is dependent on A) training a considerable number of ophthalmologists with corneal fellowships, and B) establishing and expanding the corneal eye banks. There are approximately 300 ophthalmologists with corneal fellowship in the Iran, and the estimated number of corneal transplantation performed annually in Iran is 7,000 cases.
