Gregory Stephen Church

Gregory Stephen Church of Hamedan is one of the historical attractions of this city. Gregory Church is one of the important historical symbols of the presence of religious minorities in Iran and Hamedan. The history of this church dates back to the past when a group of Isfahan Armenians and Russian Armenian traders and immigrants who settled in Hamedan due to the World War thought of building a place of worship for themselves to meet their spiritual needs. As a result, in 1676, coinciding with the reign of Shah Suleiman the Safavid, this group of Armenians built Gregory Stephen Church of Hamedan. This church is also the burial place of many well-known religious figures such as His Excellency Driznik Vartapat Karksian, the vice-caliph of the Armenians of Jolfa in Isfahan and the religious leader of the Armenians of Hamedan and Arak, and the priest in Khachatur, and many others. Gregory Stephen Church of Hamedan has a rectangular plan with dimensions of 13 by 21 meters. The entrance to the church has four four-meter round columns. Bricks were used in the facade of the church and crescent-shaped arches were added to decorate it. The church bell tower is one of the beauties of this church, built in the style of rack domes and standing about 5.2 meters above ground level.
