Abarkouh Cypress located in the city of Abarkouh, also known as Abrquh, is one of the world's oldest living organisms. The trunk of the tree is around eleven and a half meters and it is estimated to be between 25 to 28 meters high. Some scientists have estimated the age of the tree to be around 4,500 years, but recently scientists from Japan and Russia visited the tree and its age has been estimated to be around eight thousand years. The tree has a significant place in the Iranian culture and various legends were told of the tree’s planting. Some legends attribute the tree to Zoroaster. In Zoroastrian culture, the cypress is very well respected as it is a symbol of immortality and an evergreen tree. In other myths, the tree is said to be planted by Noah’s son, seeding the tree after the big flood in this area.
