The Swinging Minarets

The Swinging Minarets

It is the mausoleum of Amoo Abdullah, a prominent Persian thinker, famous for its two minarets, each 17 meters tall and 9 meters wide. The mausoleum itself was built during the reign of the Muslim Mongol emperor Uljeitu, there are tile works remained from that era. The minarets were added later, at an unknown time, probably end of Safavid era. By shaking one minaret, not only the whole minaret shakes, but the other minaret start shaking as well. The reason behind the movement is not known, and many theories have been written about it, since there are similar constructs in other cities and countries as well. Some believe it’s the result of a physical phenomenon known as Doppler Effect, but nothing have been proven.
